Tips for Coloring Rumi Coloring Sheets
1. Making the Demon Marks Glow
Those lines on her face in the demon form aren’t just tattoos. They are supposed to be glowing with energy. I used to teach my second graders about color contrast, and it applies right here.
If you use a normal crayon for her skin, use a bright neon marker for the marks. The wet ink next to the waxy crayon makes it literally jump off the page. It looks messy if you rush, but taking your time is absolutely worth it.
2. Don’t Just Scribble the Hair
Rumi has that massive, complicated braid in almost every picture. It is tempting to just take a brown marker and color the whole shape flat. Don’t do that.
Pick three different shades of the same color. Start with the lightest one all over. Then take the darkest one and just trace the lines my team drew for the braid bumps. It adds instant volume without being hard to do.
3. Bring on the Glitter Pens
KPop outfits are never boring. Rumi’s jackets have chains, epaulets, and weird little zippers everywhere. Plain gray crayon for metal is just depressing.
Go raid your craft drawer for those cheap metallic gel pens. We use silver for the zippers and gold for the shoulder pieces. It takes a minute to dry, so tell your kids not to smear it with their hands immediately. Will they listen? Probably not.
4. Coloring the Bath Water
The picture of her in the bath is so relaxing. But coloring water can be tricky because it shouldn’t just be a solid block of dark blue. That looks like spilled ink, not a bath.
I always suggest using a colored pencil for water instead of a marker. You can press lightly near her shoulders and press harder near the bottom of the tub. It creates a nice natural gradient. Plus, you can leave a little white space around the edge for bubbles.
5. Getting the Skin Tone Right
Sometimes kids get frustrated when the peach crayon doesn’t look like the character on TV. I get it. The lighting on stage makes everything look completely different anyway.
Try lightly mixing peach and a tiny bit of yellow or pink. If she is in her demon form, maybe add a very faint layer of purple or gray over the regular skin tone. It gives her that otherworldly, spooky vibe without ruining the drawing.
6. Don’t Ignore the Background
We intentionally left some of the backgrounds simple, like the bookshelf or the square panels. It keeps the focus entirely on Rumi. But leaving them stark white feels a bit unfinished.
Use a really fat, light-colored marker to just sweep across the back. Or rather, barely touch the paper with it. A pale yellow or a mint green works great. It frames the character perfectly. It also hides any little mistakes where a crayon went outside the lines.
7. Those Big Anime Eyes
The eyes are the focal point of all these pages. Whether she is scared or giving a thumbs up, the entire expression is in the eyes. I always tell my kids to color the eyes last.
Use your sharpest pencil for the iris. Leave the little white highlight circles completely empty. If you accidentally color over them, a tiny dot of white correction fluid fixes it right up. It brings the whole face to life.
8. Markers vs. Crayons
You don’t have to choose just one. My kitchen table is usually covered in a mix of everything, which is mildly inconvenient when it’s time for dinner. The thick paper we format these for can handle a lot of abuse.
Try coloring her clothes with markers so they look bright and synthetic. Then use crayons for her face and hair so they look much softer. The clash of textures actually looks amazing in person. Let them experiment and make a mess.
