The Pink Skin Dilemma
Finding the absolute perfect shade of pink for these pigs is strangely difficult. The standard pink crayon is usually way too bright or looks exactly like cheap bubblegum.
When you have corralled 34 first graders you learn to improvise very quickly. I just take a red colored pencil and have them color lightly on their free printable Peppa Pig coloring page instead. It gives you a much better pastel look. Just do not let them press down hard.
Muddy Puddles are Messy
Brown crayons typically get ignored until it is time to color actual dirt. But Peppa requires a massive amount of brown wax for all those muddy puddle splashes.

Those Bright Red Dresses

I highly suggest putting a scrap piece of cardboard underneath their artwork before they start. This decision is let’s say not the most obvious. Or rather it is absolutely counter-intuitive until you scrub wax off a wooden table.
Managing the Thick Black Outlines
Our illustrators purposely use very thick black lines for these characters to match the animation style perfectly. Kids get super stressed out when they accidentally color over the borders and ruin the whole face.
I tell them to trace the inside of the black line with their pink crayon first. It creates this little physical wax barrier that helps keep the wild scribbles contained inside the actual shape. They figure it out eventually.
Coloring George’s Blue
George wears a vibrant blue shirt that is actually kind of hard to match with a standard crayon box. The primary blue is usually a bit too dark and heavy.
Try layering a sky blue over a tiny bit of white wax. It is like balancing a spreadsheet where the messy layers somehow equal a perfect total. The shirt ends up looking bright and animated without demanding perfect precision.
Dealing with Open Park Backgrounds
A lot of these drawings have massive rolling hills or open sky behind the animal families. Toddlers look at all that open white space and just give up halfway through the project.
I usually tell my kids to break the page into smaller chunks and tackle the clouds first. If they color the background it somehow makes the main pig pop out more. The final result is always far better when the page is not mostly dead paper.
