1. Layering the Greens
Dinosaurs mean a lot of green. I mean a ridiculous amount. If your kid just grabs the standard green crayon and scrubs it over everything it looks totally flat. We learned this the hard way with my youngest.
I always try to push them to dig through the bucket for different shades. Olive green for the ground and maybe a bright lime for the leaves. It breaks up the monotony and actually makes the dinosaurs stand out more.
2. Don’t Ignore the Dirt
The prehistoric world was basically just rocks and mud. There were no paved roads back then obviously. So you have all these big blank spaces around the characters’ feet.
You do not have to color every single pebble perfectly. Just a light sideways rub with a brown or grey crayon does the trick perfectly. It grounds the characters so they do not look like they are floating in white space.
3. Blending Dinosaur Skin
Dinosaur skin is not perfectly smooth like plastic. It is bumpy and leathery and gross. Trying to capture that texture with a single color is pretty much impossible.
Put down a light base color first. Then take a darker shade and just add little dots or squiggles along the edges of their backs. All this coloring strategy comes down to one thing: let it be a little messy.
4. Making the Lava Glow
You have a few pages with erupting volcanoes in the background. It is super tempting to just color the lava solid red and move on. But real fire and lava have layers of heat.
Start with yellow right in the center where it is hottest. Then wrap orange around that and finally put red on the very outside edges. The visual effect is honestly pretty cool when you take the time to do it right.
5. Handling Petrie’s Wings
Pterodactyl wings are essentially just giant flaps of skin. They look weird if you color them the exact same shade as his body. Petrie is already a strange muddy brown color anyway.
Try using a lighter tan or even a dusty pink for the inside of his wings. It gives him a bit more dimension and makes him look less like a flying potato. Colored pencils are highly recommended for those skinny little wing fingers.
6. Sky Colors Beyond Blue
Every kid defaults to a bright blue sky. But the Land Before Time world is always full of dust and ash and strange lighting. It was a harsh environment.
Swapping the blue for a hazy purple or a sunset orange completely changes the mood of the picture. I think it makes the scenes look a bit more dramatic and movie-accurate. Plus it is just fun to break the coloring rules sometimes.
7. The Beauty of Broken Crayons
We have a massive plastic tub filled with broken crayon pieces. Around 104 useless little stubs that I refuse to throw away. But they are actually perfect for these specific dinosaur scenes.
Peeling the paper back and rubbing the flat side of a broken crayon over the paper creates an amazing rocky texture. You get these rough uneven patches that look exactly like prehistoric dirt. Will this work for every picture? No idea. But today it works.
8. Letting Them Be Wrong
I used to get so annoyed when my kids would color Cera blue or make Littlefoot bright pink. I was a teacher. I wanted things to be accurate and correct.
But honestly who actually cares. If they want a neon pink triceratops, let them have a neon pink triceratops. Sometimes stepping back and keeping your mouth shut is the best artistic advice you can give as a parent.
