My girls discovered Mario Kart last month. Total chaos… Suddenly everything in this house has to be space princesses.

1. Getting the Hair Right
Her hair is not a normal yellow. It is actually a very pale almost platinum blonde. If you just use a standard yellow crayon she ends up looking way too bright. I usually have the kids start with a very light cream color.
Then they can lightly add some pale yellow over the top for depth. It makes a huge difference in the final look. Honestly it took me like 14 tries to figure that out. Just trust me on the cream base layer.
2. The Signature Blue Dress
That turquoise dress is iconic but hard to nail down. The color sits somewhere right between blue and green. Pure blue looks wrong and pure green is even worse. I think finding the exact shade is a lost cause honestly.
Instead we just layer a light blue pencil and a mint green pencil together. It gives it that slightly frosty look she always has. It is a bit of extra work but it pays off. All this color theory comes down to one thing: just mix them until it looks right.
3. Making the Magic Glow
She is always surrounded by little stars and glowing magic bits. The trick to making them look bright is actually leaving them completely blank. Let the white paper do the heavy lifting for you. It sounds counter intuitive but it works.
Then you take a light yellow or blue and color just the very edge of the star. It creates a sort of halo effect. When you fill in the dark space around it the star will pop right off the page. Will this work tomorrow? No idea. But today it works perfectly.
4. Luma Color Choices
Those little star creatures she hangs out with come in all sorts of colors. You do not have to stick to just yellow. We have colored them apricot pink or even a weird neon green. The games show them in basically every shade imaginable.
So let the kids go completely wild with the Lumas. It is a great way to use up those random crayon stubs at the bottom of the box. Giving them permission to break the rules usually keeps them busy way longer. That might cause some inconvenience if they color on the table but whatever.
5. Managing Crown Details
Her crown is silver not gold like the other princesses. I see people make that mistake literally all the time. Using a grey colored pencil is usually the safest bet here. Crayons are too thick to get into the little jewel details.
You can use a bright red and a bright blue for the jewels themselves. The silver and red contrast looks incredibly sharp on paper. Sometimes skipping explanations and just handing them the right pencils is the easiest parenting hack. Just let them figure out the details themselves without interfering.
6. The Right Tools for Space
Space scenes require a lot of smooth dark coverage. Cheap wax crayons are just going to frustrate everyone involved. I strongly suggest pulling out some decent colored pencils or even soft pastels if you are brave. The blending is just infinitely better on thick paper.

7. Shading the Folds
Her dress has a lot of movement and thick folds in the fabric. To make it look real you need to add some shadows. Just use a slightly darker blue right where the lines curve inward. It is a very simple technique that adds a ton of depth.
