The Sad Little Melting Snowman

This guy is looking pretty worried under that big bright sun. You can see the water puddling right around his base.

My youngest always feels so bad for him and colors the puddle bright blue to give him more cold water. It is a great way to talk about seasons changing.

The Runaway Button

He looks absolutely shocked that his bottom button just popped off. It is rolling away right across the snow.

I love the little pine trees in the background of this one. Kids usually go straight for that rolling button with a bright red crayon. It adds a funny little story to a basic winter scene.

Snowman by the Wooden Fence

Here is a classic happy guy standing next to a classic wooden fence. The snow is piled up thick on the top rails.

This is one of my favorite snowman coloring sheets for practicing texture. Kids can color the wood grain brown and leave the puffy snow pure white.

Slipping on the Frozen Pond

He looks like he is trying to keep his balance on the ice. His arms are straight out and he is wearing these tiny little ice skates. I think it is hilarious.

The ice reflections are fun to shade with light blues and purples. It is one of those coloring pages of snowmen that makes you shiver just looking at it.

Glowing Winter Lights

He is just standing there looking so proud under a string of bulbs. He has a warm beanie pulled down tight.

I tell my kids to use neon colors for the lights to make them pop. Some people might use these as Frosty the snowman coloring pages if they pretend the hat is magical. Either way it looks fantastic hanging on the fridge.

The Classic Top Hat Look

This is your traditional winter setup right here. He has the tall top hat and a very thick striped scarf. He actually looks quite polite.

The thick stripes on his scarf are perfect for practicing coloring inside the lines. Whenever I need solid free snowman coloring pages for a classroom activity I grab this one first.

Cozy in a Knitted Sweater

Our team gave this guy a really cozy patterned sweater and big earmuffs. The little trees behind him make it look deep in the woods.

Coloring the intricate patterns on that sweater takes some serious focus. It is definitely one of the best printable snowman coloring pages for older kids who want a challenge.

Mismatched Mittens and Boots

This one cracks me up because he is wearing completely different mittens. He even has silly boots on his base.

It reminds me of my middle child getting dressed in the dark. These kinds of coloring pages of snowmen are great because there are no rules. Make the boots polka dotted if you want.

Tips for Coloring Snowmen

1. White Needs Shadows Too

The biggest mistake kids make is leaving the snow completely blank paper white. That just makes it look unfinished and flat.

Teach them to take a very light blue or gray crayon and trace the inside edges of the circles. It gives the body roundness so it doesn’t look like a flat pancake.

2. Mixing Scarf Textures

Scarves shouldn’t just be one solid color blocked out. Real knitted things have tiny shadows and overlapping yarn.

Have them try drawing tiny little x marks over the solid color to mimic yarn. When you print out these snowman coloring sheets for the weekend try offering colored pencils instead of markers. You get way more control that way.

3. The Perfect Carrot Nose

Carrots are not just neon orange. If you look at a real carrot it has brown dirt lines and little ridges. It is bumpy and weird.

Layer a bit of yellow under the orange and add tiny brown specks. It makes a huge difference in the final picture.

4. Glowing Coal Eyes

Coal is shiny right? It reflects the winter sun bouncing off the snow.

Tell the kids to leave a tiny white speck uncolored in the top right corner of every coal eye and button. It instantly makes the face look alive and wet.

5. Making Frosty Magical

Sometimes kids want to recreate their favorite movies. They want the hat to look like it has actual magic swirling around it. Honestly I get it.

Use a yellow or gold crayon and draw a faint glowing halo around the top hat. These make perfect Frosty the snowman coloring pages if you add that magical yellow glow. Just smudge the yellow lightly with a finger.

6. Don’t Forget the Background

A snowman floating in white space is a bit boring. There is always a sky behind them.

You don’t have to color the whole sky solid blue. Just sweeping some light purple or pink behind the snowman gives it a cold evening sunset vibe.

7. Wobbly Stick Arms

Branches are never perfectly straight lines. They have bumps and knots and broken bits.

I tell my kids to shake their hands just a tiny bit when coloring the arms. Use dark brown but mix in some black near the base. It looks so much more realistic.

8. Messy is Better

Coloring inside the lines is overrated anyway. Snow is messy and winter is chaotic. If the blue sky bleeds into the white snow it just looks like a blizzard.

Let the kids color outside the borders and smudge the crayons. The best art usually happens when you stop trying to make it look perfect.
