1. The Spiky Hair Dilemma
Anime hair defies all known laws of physics. It shoots out in rigid triangles that honestly make no sense in the real world. If you just color it flat black it looks like a heavy plastic helmet. I learned this the hard way watching my seven-year-old ruin a perfectly good page.
You need to leave little slivers of white near the top of the spikes. It acts as a natural highlight and gives the hair actual volume. It is like frosting a cake and leaving the edges bare. Just a touch of negative space makes a huge difference.
2. Shading Metallic Armor
Characters like Vegeta wear segmented armor that needs to look tough and protective. Scrubbing a yellow crayon over it just makes him look like he is wearing a cheap sweater. Metal has harsh shadows and bright reflections.
Take a dark mustard color and heavily trace the bottom edge of every single armor plate. Then lightly fill the rest with a pale yellow. All this shading work comes down to one thing: contrast is king. If everything is the same tone it just falls flat.
3. Capturing Fast Motion
You see a lot of swoosh lines in these action poses. Trunks swinging his sword or Sanji kicking. Those lines represent pure speed and momentum. Do not just trace them with a black pen and ignore them.
They need to be colored lightly with whatever color the main energy is. If the sword is glowing blue then use a very light icy blue for the air trails. Press hard at the start of the line and lift your pencil at the end. It mimics the fade of an actual moving object.
4. Glowing Energy Effects
There is so much magic and energy blasting around in these shows. Solid colors kill the illusion of glowing light immediately. I see kids press down as hard as they can with a red marker for a fire blast. It just looks like a blob of ketchup.
Start from the center with pure white or very light yellow. Then slowly blend into orange and finally a harsh red on the very outside edge. It creates a radiant core that actually looks hot. Will this work tomorrow? No idea. But today it works perfectly.

8. Dealing With Panic Faces
Usopp running away is a pure comedy masterpiece. His eyes are popping out and his mouth is taking up half his face. Normal skin tones do not apply when a character is in pure panic mode.
Add a little bit of pale blue or sickly green right under his eyes to show how terrified he is. Maybe shade his tongue a stark pale pink instead of a deep red. These exaggerated emotions require exaggerated color choices. I should probably thaw some chicken. honestly just let them experiment and get weird with it.
