Tips for Coloring Labubu
1. Nailing the Furry Look
Labubu has this very specific fuzzy texture that looks flat if you just color it solid brown or grey. I always tell my kids to use short quick strokes with their colored pencils. It makes a huge difference.
Don’t just scribble back and forth in big blocks. Pick two different shades of the same color and layer them lightly. Honestly it looks so much better that way.
2. Making the Smile Pop
The teeth are a huge part of the character’s creepy-cute charm. A lot of kids just color right over the mouth by accident. I get it. They are rushing.
Suggest leaving the teeth completely blank white or using a tiny bit of pale yellow. Then press really hard with a dark pencil for the inside of the mouth. It gives that nice contrast.
3. Creating Glowing Effects
For the pages with the lantern or the fireplace you want it to actually look warm. Start with a bright yellow right in the center of the light source. Trust me on this.
Then softly blend out into orange and then red as you get further away. You can even use a finger to smudge crayon wax a little bit. It creates a really neat glowing halo effect.
4. Don’t Settle for Plain Blue Water
The muddy puddle and the misty lake shouldn’t just be one flat shade of blue crayon. Puddles are muddy. Mix some light brown and grey into that water.
For the lake use a darker blue near the bottom of the boat to make a shadow. Keep the water lighter near the mountains in the back. That depth makes the whole picture look less like a flat wall.
5. Dark Skies Need Patience
Coloring a massive night sky black or dark blue takes forever. My youngest always gives up halfway through and leaves the sky patchy white. Sound familiar?
I suggest using watercolor paints for those big open backgrounds if you printed on thick enough paper. It covers the area fast and dries looking like a real misty evening. Plus it saves your black markers from drying out in one day.
6. Tiny Details Need Sharp Pencils
Some of these designs have tons of little things going on. The jar on the shelf has a tiny skull and a potion bottle that are practically microscopic. You can’t tackle those with blunt crayons.
Keep a good sharpener handy. Seriously. Take a break and sharpen those colored pencils before doing the shelf items. It prevents color from bleeding out of the lines and making a muddy mess.
7. Don’t Ignore the Eyes
Labubu has these big staring eyes that kind of anchor the whole face. If you mess up the eyes the whole character looks a bit off. Leave the little catchlight circles totally white.
You can color the iris whatever fun color you want but keep the pupil pitch black. Sometimes we use a black gel pen just for the pupils to make them really stand out against the crayon. It is a tiny detail but it works.
8. Pink Monsters are Fine
Who says the fur has to be brown or grey? These are your printables. If your kid wants a neon pink or a radioactive green monster then let them go crazy.
My daughter colored one entirely in rainbow stripes last week. It looked absolutely unhinged but she was so proud of it. The whole point is to have fun and waste some time before dinner.
