Squirtle Coloring Pages (Free Printable PDFs)

Water type starters are just built different. My middle kid absolutely refuses to pick any other Pokemon and frankly I kind of get it. So I put together this set of Squirtle coloring pages for all the little trainers out there who need some quiet time.

There is something universally appealing about a tiny blue turtle with a huge attitude. You will definitely find plenty of splashing and smiling in these Squirtle coloring sheets to keep your wild crew busy on a rainy Tuesday.

Setting up a decent activity station takes maybe two minutes but buys you around 42 or 43 minutes of total peace. I usually print a whole stack at once and just leave them in a plastic tray with fresh crayons.

Kids always surprise me with their color choices anyway. Sometimes they just need a tiny nudge to start creating something really cool.

Squirtle Coloring Page Highlights

Chasing a Dragonfly

This little guy is happily running through a shallow stream after a dragonfly. It captures that pure childhood joy perfectly. Kids can practice coloring the splashing water and the detailed wings of the bug.

I love offering coloring pages of Squirtle like this one because it encourages outdoor imagination. The background has plenty of trees and grass to fill in. Just grab some earthy greens and bright blues.

Dripping Wet on the Shore

Here we have him pulling himself up onto a rocky bank. Water is literally streaming right off his shell. It looks like he just finished a heavy swim in the pond behind him.

These specific Squirtle coloring sheets are great for teaching kids about highlights. If they leave the water drops white it makes the whole picture look shiny and wet. The rocks give a nice rough texture contrast too.

Powerful Hydro Pump Blast

Talk about a serious water attack. He is shooting a stream so intense that it is knocking him completely backward into the river. The energy in this drawing is really fun.

When we design free Squirtle coloring pages our goal is capturing real action. Your kids will love coloring the massive splash and the rocky cliffs. It feels like a real battle scene.

Sleeping in Autumn Leaves

Sometimes even energetic water types need a good nap. He is curled up entirely inside his shell and resting in a pile of fallen leaves. It is incredibly peaceful.

Out of all the coloring pages of Squirtle we made this one is my favorite for fall. The kids can go wild with oranges and reds for the leaves. It makes the blue shell really pop against the warm background.

Hiding and Peeking

This is a classic shy turtle moment. He retreated completely into his shell but has one large eye peeking out. It sits right in the middle of a grassy field with little flowers.

A Squirtle coloring in sheet like this one is perfect for younger toddlers. The large round shape of the shell is very easy to color inside the lines. Plus they always giggle at that one little eyeball staring back.

Captain of the Wooden Boat

Look at him wearing a tiny sailor hat. He is proudly steering a small wooden sailboat across gentle waves. The puffy clouds in the sky add a really nice touch.

Adding props always makes printable Squirtle coloring pages way more engaging. I like to ask my kids where they think he is sailing to. It sparks a whole story while they color the wooden planks.

Investigating the River Crayfish

Curiosity is just a huge part of childhood. Here he is looking closely at a little crayfish that is hiding under a smooth river stone. The riverbed is full of interesting details.

When printing Squirtle coloring sheets I always look for ones with extra animals. It gives the kids more subjects to focus on. They can make the crayfish a bright red to contrast with the blue.

Winter Snowflakes by the Pond

Winter scenes bring a completely different mood. He is sitting quietly by a still pond watching snowflakes drift down. The pine trees in the back really set the chilly scene.

I highly recommend a Squirtle coloring in sheet like this for those cold January afternoons. Kids can use cool purples and pale blues for the winter sky. Leaving the snow pure white creates a beautiful effect.

Tips for Coloring Squirtle Coloring Pages

1.The Classic Blue

Getting that exact shade of blue can feel surprisingly tricky. Most standard crayon boxes only give you a really dark navy or a pale sky blue.

I usually tell my kids to color lightly with a regular blue first. Then we go over it with a tiny bit of white or silver to smooth it out.

2. Shell Shading Techniques

The shell is basically the most important part. You have the brownish-red on the back and the pale yellow on the belly.

My trick is using a darker brown right around the edges of the shell plates. It instantly makes the whole drawing look three dimensional instead of flat.

3. Blending Water Effects

A lot of these pictures have intense splashing water. If you just grab one blue crayon it honestly ends up looking pretty boring.

Try mixing turquoise and a little bit of green for the shallow parts of the pond. It gives the water a realistic murky depth that kids love.

4. Crayons vs Markers

I honestly go back and forth on this debate every single week. Markers give you those bright popping colors that make cartoon characters look amazing.

But crayons are way better for blending the sky and the grass backgrounds. Sometimes we compromise and use markers for the character and crayons for everything else.

5. Making the Eyes Shine

Anime characters always have those big expressive eyes. It is crucial to leave the little white catchlights completely blank.

If your kid accidentally colors over the white circles you can easily fix it. Just use a tiny dab of white correction fluid or a white gel pen.

6. Adding Dirt and Grit

Battles get messy and Pokemon are not perfectly clean all the time. I encourage my class to add little scuff marks.

Take a gray or light brown colored pencil and lightly shade some dirt onto his knees. It adds a whole new level of storytelling to the picture.

7. The Right Greens for Nature

You will notice a lot of trees and bushes in these backgrounds. Using just one standard green crayon makes the forest look incredibly fake.

Mix a yellow-green for the leaves catching the sunlight. Then use a dark forest green for the shadows underneath the bushes.

8. Managing Hand Fatigue

Coloring huge backgrounds can completely tire out a little hand. About halfway through they usually start scribbling just to get it done.

I teach them to use the side of the crayon for big areas like the sky. It covers way more paper and saves their grip strength.
