It creates a much softer look. If they press down hard it mimics that warm animated glow perfectly. This decision is let’s say not the most obvious. Or rather it is absolutely counter-intuitive until you see the final results on paper.

Those massive fluffy appendages take up a huge chunk of real estate on the paper. Kids look at all that open space and just panic scribble.
They usually just drag one flat marker across the whole thing and ruin the texture. I try to teach them how to add volume. Tell them to leave the very tips bright white just like in the video games.
Then they can use short little pencil strokes to build up the orange fur. It is like balancing a spreadsheet where the messy data somehow equals a perfect total. The fur ends up looking layered and soft.

I teach my oldest to leave a stark white diamond shape right near the top edge. It acts as a fake light reflection that tricks your eye. Then they layer lighter colors near the white and darker tones near the bottom. It gives the gemstone incredible depth.
6. Managing the Background Skies
Most of these layouts feature big open skies or dense pine forests behind the fox. Staring at around 97-98 units of negative space is intimidating for a young artist.
They typically just abandon the background and move on to the next sheet. I completely understand because I skip the hard parts of my own chores too. I encourage them to at least put a light wash of blue over the sky.
Dragging a colored pencil sideways across the paper is a super fast way to fill that empty void. It prevents the character from looking like he is floating in a white void. The final contrast is totally worth the extra three minutes of effort.
